Safely Using Over-the-Counter Antacids for Acidity and Heartburn

-

Antacids and acid-reducing medicines from the pharmacy can bring quick relief from acidity and heartburn. But regular self-use without understanding the basics can hide bigger problems.

Simple chewable antacids neutralise stomach acid directly and act quickly but briefly. They’re fine for occasional, mild discomfort after heavy meals. Stronger medicines that reduce acid production (like certain tablets taken before food) work differently and often last longer.

Always read labels for dose limits and duration of self-treatment. If you find yourself needing these medicines many times a week for more than a couple of weeks, or symptoms come back as soon as you stop, it’s time to see a doctor.

Red flags include difficulty swallowing, pain when swallowing, vomiting, weight loss, or black or bloody stools. In such cases, don’t keep increasing antacids – urgent medical evaluation is needed.

Also remember that antacids can interfere with absorption of other medicines and some nutrients. Taking them at the same time as regular tablets may not be ideal. Pharmacists can guide you on correct timing.
