Local anaesthetic injections numb a small area for dental work, stitches or minor procedures. The numbness is helpful during treatment but can cause problems if you’re not careful while it lasts.
The biggest risk is biting or burning the numb area without realising it. After dental work, avoid chewing on the numb side and skip hot drinks until full feeling returns. Many people accidentally bite their lip, tongue or cheek and only notice once the numbness wears off.
The numb area may feel swollen or “huge,” even though it looks normal. Try not to poke it repeatedly with your tongue or fingers. This only irritates tissues and extends discomfort.
Numbness usually fades within a couple of hours, depending on the drug and dose. If it persists much longer than the dentist or doctor predicted, or if you notice drooping of the face or difficulty closing your eye, seek medical advice.
Driving immediately after some procedures may not be recommended; always follow specific instructions given to you at the clinic.
