Understanding the Role of a Physiotherapist After Injury or Surgery

-

Physiotherapists are movement specialists who help you recover function after injury, surgery or long illness. Their role is often misunderstood as “just giving exercises,” but it’s much more structured than that.

After an injury – like a sprain, fracture or muscle tear – they assess how your joints move, which muscles are weak or tight, and what activities you need to return to. Based on this, they design a plan that may include manual therapy, targeted exercises, posture correction and home routines.

After surgery, physiotherapy often starts early, sometimes in the hospital itself. Gentle movements, breathing exercises and gradual weight-bearing reduce complications and speed recovery. Without guidance, people may either overprotect and stiffen up, or push too hard and damage healing tissues.

A good physiotherapist listens to your goals, explains what each exercise does, and adjusts the plan as you progress. Your part is to follow the plan consistently and give honest feedback about pain and difficulty.

Together, you create a bridge from “medically treated” to “fully functional in daily life.”
