Trying a new skincare product on your entire face straightaway can be risky if you have sensitive or reactive skin. A simple patch test reduces the chance of major flare-ups.
Choose a small, discreet area – often behind the ear or on the side of the neck. Apply a tiny amount of the product once a day for a couple of days. Watch for redness, itching, stinging or rash. If any strong reaction occurs, it’s a sign to avoid using it widely.
For leave-on products like moisturisers or serums, patch testing is especially useful. Wash-off products like cleansers are usually less risky but can still be tested if you’re very sensitive.
Remember that some reactions are delayed and show up after 24–48 hours. So rushing the process defeats the purpose. Also, patch testing doesn’t guarantee zero reaction on the face, but it catches many issues early.
If you have a history of serious allergies, medical patch testing under a dermatologist’s supervision is safer than home trials with multiple new products.
