Braces create lots of new corners and edges for plaque to hide. Even people who brushed well before suddenly find it harder to keep teeth clean. A few common mistakes make things worse.
Rushing is the first one. With braces, the quick 30-second “scrub” doesn’t work. You need a bit more time and a system: outer surfaces over brackets, inner surfaces, and chewing surfaces. Angling the brush at 45 degrees towards the gumline is still important.
Another mistake is ignoring the small spaces around brackets and under the wire. Special orthodontic brushes or interdental brushes can slide under the wire to remove stuck food. Skipping this step lets plaque sit untouched.
Some people also brush too hard, thinking “stronger is better.” Hard scrubbing can irritate gums and damage enamel near brackets. Soft bristles plus gentle, repeated strokes are safer and more effective.
Finally, many brace wearers forget to check their work. A quick look in the mirror after meals – especially between front teeth and in the molar area – helps catch missed spots.
If gums are puffy and bleeding often, it’s not “normal with braces”; it’s a sign to improve cleaning and maybe ask your dentist or orthodontist for a short brushing demo.
