Caring for Skin Under Beards and Moustaches to Avoid Itch and Flakes

-

Beards and moustaches can hide a lot – including irritated skin. Itching, flakes and small bumps under facial hair are common but often ignored because they’re not immediately visible.

The first step is cleaning. Facial hair traps sweat, oil, food particles and dust. Wash the area with a gentle facial cleanser, making sure to massage it through the hair to reach the skin underneath. Regular shampoo designed for scalp hair may be too harsh for the face.

After washing, pat dry and use a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser or beard oil (if your skin tolerates oils) to keep both hair and skin soft. Dryness often shows up as flaking that looks like “beard dandruff.”

Trimming can also help. Very dense, long hair can make it harder for products to reach the skin and for air to circulate. If you notice red, painful bumps, ingrown hairs might be the issue, and a different shaving or trimming technique may be needed.

If itching and flakes persist despite good hygiene, or if there are thick scales and redness, conditions like seborrheic dermatitis or fungal infections may be involved, and a dermatologist’s input is useful.
