Tiny Chips on Front Teeth: When to Repair and When to Just Smooth Them

-

Small chips on front teeth are very common. You might notice them after biting a fork, crunching on something hard, or just over years of use. Not every chip needs major treatment, but none should be ignored completely.

If the chip is extremely small, doesn’t catch your tongue, and there’s no sensitivity, your dentist may simply smooth the sharp edge and leave it. This can prevent further cracking and make the tooth feel better without adding material.

If the chipped area is visible when you smile, or it creates roughness that cuts your lip or tongue, a small bonding repair can restore shape. Tooth-coloured material is added and polished to blend with the natural tooth.

Pain, sensitivity to cold, or a crack line that extends towards the gum are more serious signs. In such cases, your dentist will check if deeper layers are affected and whether stronger options like veneers or crowns are better for long-term strength.

The key is to have chips assessed rather than guessing. Early, simple repairs are easier and cheaper than waiting until a small chip becomes a big fracture.
